We’re starting to move the Digital Preservation Training Programme into the realms of the online. As a first step, we’re releasing a free OAIS online course aimed to help with the understanding of the OAIS Reference Model.

The content for this short course comes out of what we currently teach on the Beginner version of the DPTP face-to-face Course. Our plan is to move away from teaching OAIS in the classroom, and move towards students learning it online before they attend the teaching.

For about the past seven years I have been testing the M-Disc permanent digital storage media. The M-Disc is designed to use inert, permanent materials, so that digital data written to the discs are permanent.

A proposal to use PDF/A as a Submission Information Package (SIP) under the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model has generated a small stir on Twitter.

The aim of a SIP is to deliver a collection of documents in a form suitable for ingesting into an archive. It needs to have enough metadata to create a proper Archive Information Package (AIP). The model doesn’t specify what SIP format(s) an archive should accept. XML files following well-known archival schemas such as METS for the overall package and PREMIS for preservation information are popular.

The NDSA Infrastructure Working Group’s goals are to identify and share emerging practices around the development and maintenance of tools and systems for the curation, preservation, storage, hosting, migration, and similar activities supporting the long term preservation of digital content. One of the ways the IWG strives to achieve their goals is to collaboratively develop and publish technical guidance documents about core digital preservation activities. The NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation and the Fixity document are examples of this.

The Royal BC Museum [has] launched a new website and searchable database for the BC Archives called, fittingly enough, Access to Memory.
An improvement on the old BC Archives website for archivists and users alike, AtoM is an ideal platform for the digitized materials in the Ida Halpern fonds (or collection). Halpern is renowned for her recordings of usic from across the West Coast and the BC Archives holds 342 of her audio recordings, 16.8 metres worth of written research material and 735 photographs.

Today we are featuring a guest post from an important member of the Omeka community, Jess Waggoner. She has led the creation of the Grateful Dead Archive Online and several Omeka plugins. Here, she writes about her and her team’s experiences building the Grateful Dead Archive Online with Omeka, lessons learned about that project and the needs of a large institutional library’s data coordination and workflow management, and plugins that reflect that work.

Through the expertise of many, we can leverage success for the collaborative was the guiding philosophy as members of the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries considered how we might utilize technology and software to join our digital collections enabling access to a wealth of collections. In 2013, members of the Alliance were struggling to develop and support digital collections in a variety of formats. Librarians were unsure how to handle video, photos, books, and learning objects that seemed to mushroom overnight with rising and uncontrolled costs.

A report written during phase 1 of a Jisc funded project to investigate the potential of using Archivematica for the digital preservation of research data as part of a wider technical infrastructure for research data management. The project was a collaboration between the University of Hull and the University of York.
