This report presents the findings of a study conducted by Bertram Lyons and Kara Van Malssen of AVPreserve, on behalf of the Library of Congress, to evaluate the existing state of technical, structural, and preservation metadata for audiovisual resources in the bibliographic environment in light of existing standards for audiovisual metadata, and to make recommendations about how BIBFRAME can support the expression of such information.

In today's post, I'd like to talk a little about PREMIS (the data dictionary, not the working group--although I'm sure they're all great people, like Evelyn!). We've been using something akin to PREMIS Lite as part of our digital archiving workflow for a while now. As part of our work on the ArchivesSpace-Archivematica-DSpace Workflow Integration project, however, and in thinking about our eventual move to Hydra, we're gearing up to implement something more like PREMIS Proper, especially for PREMIS Rights.

The BIBFRAME Pilot is underway and is a component of a major effort by the Library of Congress to lead the library community into the linked open data world. Developing BIBFRAME requires involvement of information specialists to create a new ecosystem in which bibliographic data are compatible with the broader World Wide Web environment. Speakers will discuss progress to date, relevance of BIBFRAME in today’s environment, and the current status of the BIBFRAME Editor, including a demonstration of the modifications to the Editor from a programmer’s perspective.

Downloading an object over the internet through a standard web-browser is a mechanism that is ‘less-than-optimal’ for the delivery of archival objects. Download of objects will not preserve the file-system metadata of the object. Tools like Wget can do this, but do we want the same behavior of the browser? On answering that, do we also need to create mandatory new requirements in future digital preservation systems? The repatriation of modified dates with born-digital records, for example?

I attended the 79th Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) last month in Cleveland, Ohio and was invited to participate on the Research Libraries Roundtable panel on Data Management and Curation in 21st Century Archives. Dan Noonan, e-Records/Digital Resources Archivist, moderated the discussion. Wendy Hagenmaier, Digital Collections Archivist, Georgia Tech Library and Sammie Morris, Director, Archives and Special Collections & University Archivist, Purdue University Libraries joined me on the panel.

We are pleased to announce that we have issued new guidance for Federal agencies on minimum metadata requirements for transferring permanent electronic records to NARA.

MoMA accessioned the Creative Commons License Symbol into its collection in March 2015 and it’s now on display in our design galleries as part of the exhibition This Is for Everyone: Design Experiments for the Common Good.

It therefore feels important that we just flipped our own default and shared data for more than 125,000 works from MoMA’s collection on GitHub using Creative Commons Zero (CC0).

Why might geography matter to the future of libraries?

I was talking with my old friend John Kunze a little while back and he described a project that he is involved with called “Yet Another Metadata Zoo” or yamz.net. In a world of more ontologies than you can shake a stick at, it aims to provide a simple, easy-to-use mechanism for defining and maintaining individual metadata terms and their definitions.
The project explains itself like this:
