Batch metadata assignment to archival photograph collections using facial recognition software - The Code4Lib Journal

Useful metadata is essential to giving individual meaning and value within the context of a greater image collection as well as making them more discoverable. However, often little information is available about the photos themselves, so adding consistent metadata to large collections of digital and digitized photographs is a time consuming process requiring highly experienced staff.

New Report From CLIR & Mellon Foundation Looks at Policies for Open Access to Images at 11 Art Museums

This report describes the current approaches of 11 art museums in the United States and the United Kingdom to the use of images of works of art that are in their collections and are in the public domain. Each approach is slightly different. By presenting the thought processes and methods used in these institutions, this report aims to inform the decision making of other museums that are considering open access to images in their collections.

This report describes the current approaches of 11 art museums in the United States and the United Kingdom to the use of images from their collections, when the underlying works are in the public domain. A work is considered to be in the public domain when it is not under copyright for one of several reasons: It may never have been under copyright; it may have passed out of copyright; or rights to claim copyright in the work may have been forfeited. Also, works created by the U.S. government do not have copyright protection.

Michael J. Bennett, University of Connecticut - Batch still image processing is examined in the context of operational bound monographs and manuscripts reformatting. The scaling of overall workflows through the flexible use of Lightroom, Photoshop, VueScan, and Jhove on parametrically-edited raw DNG and batch-rendered JPEG 2000 files is surveyed.
